Matthew Roome (he/him) is a saxophonist and arranger based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. His focus is primarily in contemporary, classical, jazz, and improvised music.
As a performer, Matthew can be found in various different settings, from casual bars to performance halls. He has performed as a jazz artist with several groups and series around St. John’s, including Florian Hoefner’s “Florian and Friends” series, Mark Micklethwaite’s “Happening” series, and Matthe Hardy’s Christmas Specials. As a classical/contemporary performer, Matthew has performed at various festivals and concert series in St. John’s and Montreal, including Sound Symposium, Le Vivier’s InterUniversitaire series, and the Newfound Music Festival. He has also performed with a plethora of ensembles, including the Jazz East Big Band, the NSO, Opera on the Avalon, the De La Paz Latin Quintet, and various jazz bands, wind ensembles, orchestras, and contemporary music ensembles at both the Schulich School of Music at McGill and Memorial University’s School of Music.
Matthew makes up one half of Sonic Playgrounds, an electroacoustic improv duo with Andrew Gosse on live electronics. Together, Matthew and Andrew focuson improvisation through synths, live audio processing, and drum loops. Sonic Playgrounds have recorded several improvisations and performed at MUN’s School of Music Scholarship Reception and several MUN Café Concert series events.
As a composer/arranger, Matthew writes music primarily for jazz bands, as well as wind ensembles and string orchestras. He has had his music performed by the MUN Jazz Orchestra, the Jazz East Big Band, the St. John’s Rotary Jazz Band, and the TorQ Percussion Quartet.
Outside of music, Matthew is an avid improvised theatre performer. He performs with No Vowels Improv and is an active volunteer with the Canadian Improv Games across the country.
Matthew has completed a Master of Music in Saxophone Performance at McGill University in Montreal under the instruction of Marie-Chantal Leclair, as well as a Bachelor of Music (Honours) at Memorial University in St. John’s, majoring in saxophone performance under the instruction of Dr. Christine Carter and minoring in jazz studies under the instruction of Florian Hoefner.
